The Uncommon God
Intro: “Build a man a fire, and he’ll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm for the rest of his life.”
49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
…this message is to the disciples …and for us!
What does it mean to follow this…. Jesus? The prince of Peace?
The Uncommon God
I have come to bring Fire!
1. A consuming fire
What does he mean by… “I have come to bring fire on the earth…” ?
Fire is a purifier. Crucible
1 Corinthians 3:13-15
“the builder” - the believing worker.
Work will be shown for what it is.
1 Corinthians 13:3
Example: Even giving to the poor, fasting, or praying only to get approval from people will amount to nothing and be burned up in that Day.
“…they have received their reward in full.
Application: I sponsored a guy who was struggling to stay sober for about a year. I couldn’t answer all his questions or mend his heart, but I did it because people helped me. Someone loved me when I didn’t love myself or others. I didn’t thank others. Why shouldn’t I do my best for this guy. One day he called me and said, “I’m out man, this program isn’t working for me.” And that was it. I felt like my work was for nothing, but it was motivated out of love for God, not for anything else.
Application: Motive of the heart determined whether or not it was a success.
Am I looking for recognition from people?
Am I motivated by love?
Review: Jesus is a consuming fire… let him set your world on fire.
50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!
Baptism and constraint
Baptism on the Cross for us.
Dipped in sufferings and blood but not drowned in it.
1) Jesus allowed himself to be under constraint (limited or restricted) until he did what he came to do.
2. Constrained to one purpose
“…how i wish it were already kindled.”
2) wanting to “get it over with”as we would go to the dentist it needs to happen to prevent a worse outcome, but painful getting the job done.
51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.
But what about “Peace on earth and good will toward men?”
The first thing Jesus said to his disciples after his resurrection was,
“Peace be with you.”
peace with men, with those who hate you (on your side), and
peace with God where without forgiveness, there is only sin and death.
But it’s PEACE AT A PRICE.
3. Payed the price for peace
Being persecuted (divided) means the chance for
…Christians to learn and practice mutual forbearance.
No servant is above his master.
Part of counting the cost of following Jesus is resistance to change.
- Obedience brings unwelcome change.
- Disrupts the normal dysfunction in families.
An encounter with Jesus…
4. Changes everything
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;
from now on you will fish for people.”
Example: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me,” makes enemies.
Choice. "Lunatic, Liar, or Lord", or "Mad, Bad, or God"
Did Jesus ever say, “I am God!” No.
3 things Jesus said.
a. I have authority to forgive sins — behaving as if he really was "the person chiefly offended in all offenses."
b. I have always existed
c. I intend to come back to judge the world at the end of time.
“Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to…”
~ C. S. Lewis
Encounter with Jesus… changes everything.
Being friends with me will make you enemies.
For those of us who have decided to fall at his feet and call him Lord…
To go through hell to get to heaven like he did…
5. King of the unshakable kingdom
And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and loose heart…
