Greed, Fear or Hope?
Do you want a challenge this year?
Story of Bates and the campus leaders and what they have.
Comparison is the thief of Joy.
Greed… when all you want is MORE.
Greed is usually described as an irresistible craving to possess more of something (money, material goods) than one actually needs.
Warren Buffet said to be greedy when others are fearful and vice versa.
There is a biblical link between the 2 but it’s different.
More like, Greed comes from fear.
Jesus spoke more about money than about any other singular topic.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
“Money can’t buy happiness, but it sure does help.”
1. From the heart flows everything a person does.
Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it..
Remember the rich young man? “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
Interesting the thing the man loved the most was what Jesus called a LACK.
“One thing you lack…”
The invitation: Sell your earthly riches and get treasure in Heaven.
2. Greed is a regular contender for the heart.
The often misquoted verse:
For the LOVE of money is a ROOT of all kinds of evil.
Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
1 Timothy 6:10
The root. GREED.
Example: “Mom, I need an Xbox!” “No son, you want an Xbox.”
Mark 4… parable of the sower.
3 things that hinder the Word (seed) for believers.
…seed along the path
…seed sown on rocky places
18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.
In the ‘Love of money being the root of all evil' passage, Jesus said that some people, “…have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”
Watch the Great Physician diagnose this guy’s condition:
13 Someone in the crowd said to him (Jesus),
“Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
What is life?
Life is: the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death
What about spiritual life?
Greed = Sin
The wages of sin is death.
Application: Guard your heart.
3. All sin starts in hidden places.
It’s a progression:
(x2) But who can discern their own errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.
Keep your servant also from willful sins;
may they not rule over me.
Then I will be blameless,
innocent of great transgression.
7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. 8 I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah.
And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more.
9 Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You…”
2 Samuel 12:7-9a
Why would we want what others have when we have plenty?
5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,
“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.”
Practice being joyful when others get what you think you want or need.
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
4. God is faithful to provide a way out of temptation.
Application: Pay attention to your emotions when it comes to money.
“…every time fear, isolation, or despair begin to invade the human soul this is NOT something that comes from God.”
Henri Nouwen, In the Name of Jesus, p.25
That’s the barometer that shows when you’re going down the wrong path.
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.
1 Timothy 6:6
5. Contentment is possible and holds true value.
True Gain: Contentment.
Application for Contentment:
- Pay attention to your emotions in money matters.
- Post verses about contentment so they permeate your psyche.
- Practice being joyful when others get what you want.
- Guard your heart against greed by practicing generosity.
DON’T BE AFRAID.
Let’s let 2022 be the year of CONTENTMENT.
