A Sure Thing.

Passage: 1 Corinthians 13:8-13
Service Type:

Bible Text: 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 | Speaker: Nelson Nyman | Series: The Love of God |

Intro: Beatles (Ear worm)

There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done

Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung

Nothing you can make that can’t be made

No one you can save that can’t be saved

Nothing you can do, but you can learn how to be you in time

It’s easy

All you need is love

All you need is love

Love is all you need.

8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.

The future: Now (lots of things) and then (only love).

1. Many good things don’t last.

What will outlast you?

The 3 pieces of advice older folks would give their younger selves.

take more risks

re-evaluate often

** Invest in things that will outlast you.

Example: In the 2nd Back to the Future movie, Biff went back and gave himself a sports almanac containing all the sports outcomes from 1955 to 2000 and he bet on the winning teams and made himself rich.

Want to bet on a sure thing? Put your stakes on love!

8 Love never ends.

2. Love never ends.

Then Paul says something that seems unrelated.

11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.

Example: Today is my birthday.. a friend asked me this question one time.

“Are you growing or just growing older?”

I am either growing in love or I’m not growing.

“…how naturally do men, when reason is ripened and matured, despise and relinquish their infant thoughts, put them away, reject them, esteem as nothing! Thus shall we think of our most valued gifts and acquisitions in this world, when we come to heaven. We shall despise our childish folly, in priding ourselves in such things when we are grown up to men in Christ.”

– Matthew Henry

But everyone starts as a child.

Being a child is necessary but should be temporary.

Even the more ADVANCED things only advance the permanent.

3. The temporary advances the permanent.

Example: A seed must die for a plant to grow.

Example: When a person calls on the phone, sends letters, emails, and even Skypes or Facetimes… all fade to nothing when the person arrives.

Will the Bible even exist in heaven?

12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

Paul includes himself in this partial vision.

4. Partial perception is an earthly reality.

So now faith, hope, and love abide (remain), these three;

but the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13:13

Is it just, TRY HARDER!!!

“…everything that does not come from faith is sin.”

Romans 14:23b

It’s self-propelled good deeds.

If you love me, you will keep my commandments..

John 14:15

Loving someone you cannot see is only possible by faith.

By default, loving Jesus means loving others.

5. To love Jesus is to love completely.

Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.

1 John 3:2

Pray for communion.

Ushers come forward a pass out the elements.

Listen as we prepare our hearts to take the Lord’s Supper together.

Look for faith, hope and love.

(read slowly)

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living HOPE through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through FAITH for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your FAITH—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you LOVE him. Though you do not now see him, you BELIEVE in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your FAITH, the salvation of your souls.

1 Peter 1:3-9
