What’s in a Promise?
Bible Text: Joshua 23:14 | Speaker: Nelson Nyman |
Intro: The promises of God posted on the wall behind him.
Promise can be huge motivators (if you trust the source)
Example: Brad Y. “If you break up with that girl, I’ll buy you a new truck.”
They that wait upon the Lord will renew their strength…
Joshua reminded the people at the end of his life:
Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed.
The promises of God…
1. always come true
in times of waiting, it’s hard to see but recalling past times where God came through serve to remind.
1 I cried out to God for help;
I cried out to God to hear me.
5 I thought about the former days,
the years of long ago;
7 “Will the Lord reject forever?
Will he never show his favor again?
8 Has his unfailing love vanished forever?
Has his promise failed for all time?
11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
12 I will consider all your works
and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”
Has his promise ever failed me?
2. contain the wisdom of God.
What should we do Lord?
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
Not given a time-line or told the answers will be easy to follow through on, but we are promised the answers we seek.
Example: Serenity Prayer
3. birth non-existent faith.
He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Just need to crack the door a tiny bit.
What is faith?
“Being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we cannot see.”
If God says I have received wisdom, I need to “act as if” I have it.
4. are weapons for spiritual warfare
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
The ‘shield of faith’ for example.
Submit yourselves therefore to God.
Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
To overcome FEELINGS of defeat.
Example: “You will not always feel the way you do now.”
5. guarantee that righteousness will prevail.
Have you ever been shocked by your own hunger for ungodly things?
Something harmful to you or others? Revenge?
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
It’s a metaphor about food.
“I’ll always be this way.” …is a lie to defeat you.
You can change your appetite!
6. command a reward for the humble.
Example: Jackie Robinson (first black MLB player) holding his tongue and eventually becoming a major spokesman for civil rights.
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord,
and he shall lift you up.
The opposite is also true.
Example: Andrew Murray: “If I do God’s job, he will do mine.”
If I exalt myself, he will humble me and vice versa.
God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble…
1 Peter 5:5b
But just as all the good things the Lord your God has promised you have come to you, so he will bring on you all the evil things he has threatened, until the Lord your God has destroyed you from this good land he has given you.
7. set the precedent for a godly life.
If I believe the promises of God, they become my MO (mode of operation)
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
i.e. – anxiety free living is possible!
Taking the time to bring EVERYTHING to God FIRST, puts me at peace.
Are you aware of the PROMISES OF GOD?
Are you claiming and owning them?
Application: When I find scriptures and promises, Ann Sophie writes them out in beautiful calligraphy so we can be reminded about their truths regularly.
Offer printed promises in the bowl at the front.
