Love Identified

Love Identified

Passage: 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Service Type:

Intro: Valentine’s Day joke

Summarize last week. (without love… I gain nothing)

1. Without Love, there is no profit.

What does the Bible say love looks like?

The quality that’s above all others…

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Why this description of love?

So you can identify LOVE…

What does it mean when someone says, “I love you.” ?

It tells what love should look like?

Describes the love of God.

Identifies love in myself,

Be careful not to say, “Oh the love passage, I know this one already.”

The Devil is a better theologian than any of us,

yet is a Devil still.

~ A. W. Tozer.

Am I acting in love?

2. True Christians personify Love.

Love is patient and not easily angered (irritable)

I am practicing patience with others and with God?

Are those who say they love me easily angered with me?

Do I remember that God is slow to anger with me? (His love is real)

Love is kind

Am I kind to those closest to me? (“Familiarity breeds contempt.”)

“Marriage is a relationship in which one person is always right,

and the other person is the husband.”

Do I rejoice in God’s kindness to me?

Are those who say they love me kind to me?

Wow! It’s so hard…

It’s a process…

No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

1 john 4:12

3. God’s love is made complete in his people.

does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth

Example: KC telling me I don’t need to share after every devotion.

When someone speaks the truth to me, do I rejoice?

Do I know that God is happy when I tell the truth?

Does not dishonor others

Others: If someone gossips to you, they gossip about you.

Example: I used to tear down my predecessor. Why?

always protects

Do I protect people who can’t protect themselves?

Example: “Voice for the voiceless.” / Pregnancy Center

always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres

Time Element

Do I ALWAYS trust God with my circumstances?

Example: Green card process.

Seemed like a snowball’s chance in hell.

Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

James 1:4

All these are descriptions of faith and, of course, hope.

4. Love contains all other virtues.

Keeps no record of wrongs (resentful)

no score-card

Example: Friends of mine told me that the whole time they worked with a guy he had not once asked them what they used to do for a living or about their home town.

This is fine for non-believers, but Jesus said to LOVE YOUR ENEMIES.

It does not envy,

Love pursues contentment.

it does not boast,

Me: Let another praise you, and not your own mouth;

a stranger, and not your own lips.

Proverbs 27:2

(it is not arrogant or rude - ESV)

Others: You can tell a lot about a person by how they treat the waitress.

Just as Love contains all other virtues, pride contains all others sins.

it is not proud.

Another word for pride is selfishness.

it is not self-seeking (does not insist on its own way)

Remember the 3rd stage of love. 1.Reconciliation 2.Coexisting 3.Humility

Pride puts self first.

5. Love puts self second.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Philippians 2:3-4

Jesus modeled this: “Thy will be done.”

6. Love describes God perfectly.

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.

10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

1 John 4:7-10

Could we with ink the ocean fill,

And were the skies of parchment made,

Were every stalk on earth a quill,

And every man a scribe by trade;

To write the love of God above

Would drain the ocean dry;

Nor could the scroll contain the whole,

Though stretched from sky to sky.
